The JATC (Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee) is a six-member committee comprised of representatives of IBEW Local Union 305 and The Central Indiana Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association.

The JATC selects and trains apprentice electricians for all of the Union Electrical Contractors in its nine county jurisdiction. Through the Training Director, the Committee hires instructors, sets course work and assigns apprentices to contractors for on-the-job training employment.


Inside Wireman

This five-year program includes 900 hours of related classroom training held at the Training Center (a minimum of one night per week). Related training consists of Electrical Theory, Electronics, Algebra, Trigonometry, Safety Code, Blueprint Reading and other classes.

The Fort Wayne Electrical Training School also includes 8000 hours of on-the-job training, and wage advancement as shown below.

An Electrician installs and tests electrical equipment, as well as, installs lighting fixtures and wiring systems. An Electrician connects electrical machinery equipment and controls. Electricians use a wide variety of hand tools and learn to master mechanical and technical skills and theory behind the transmission of electrical energy.

As an apprentice in the Fort Wayne Electrical Training Program, you may be required to report for on-the-job training assignments anywhere within the employment jurisdiction of the JATC. The geographical jurisdiction by Indiana counties of this JATC are: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells and Whitley.

Applications will be accepted the month of January only, Monday - Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed noon - 1p.m.) at the Fort Wayne Electrical JATC Office.

There is a $25 non-refundable application fee.

The Fort Wayne Electrical JATC serves and accepts applications from applicants living in one of the following counties: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells and Whitley.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:
(Items A. through E. must be submitted 30 days from date of application)

A. Be a minimum of 17 years of age (as verified through copy of birth certificate).

B. Present evidence that they possess a valid driver's license (as verified through copy of driver's license).

C. Be at least a high school graduate, have a GED or have a two-year Associate Degree which must include successful completion of: one full credit of high school algebra with a passing grade of “C” or better or one post high school algebra class with a passing grade.

D. Provide an official transcript for high school and completed post high school education and training or GED records.

E. Submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.

F. Must pass electrical trade's aptitude test developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research. (Only applicants scoring (5) or higher on the test will be eligible for an interview).

G. Before being indentured, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

H. Before being indentured, applicants, regardless of method of entry, will be required to provide results of a drug test as decided by the JATC.

I. Individuals who can verify (proper documentation required) that they have worked a minimum of eight thousand (8000) hours specifically in the electrical construction trade; do not need to meet the requirements of item (C).

J. Individuals who have worked a minimum of forty-five hundred (4500) hours as a Residential Wireman under an IBEW/NECA local Collective Bargaining Agreement (proper documentation required), do not need to meet the requirements of item (C).

K. Individuals who have completed at least three years of related instruction and 4500 hours of OJT as indentured apprentices in a properly registered electrical construction apprenticeship program not sponsored by IBEW/NECA (proper documentation required) do not need to meet the requirements of item (C).

The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or age - except the applicant must be at least 17 years of age to apply and 18 years of age at the time of Indenture. The JATC does not, and will not, discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such individual. The sponsor will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under applicable law and lawful regulations issued thereunder.

Applicants who meet all basic requirements will be interviewed by the JATC. Interviews will be scheduled in the order in which applications are completed-by providing all the required documents and transcripts. Apprentices will be selected in order of their final ranking.

Each apprentice, in conjunction with Ivy Tech Community College, who completes the additional classes listed below along with the National Curriculum, will receive an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Apprenticeship Technology.

Telecommunication Installer Technician

This three year program includes 480 hours of related classroom training held at the Training Center (a minimum of one night per week).

Related training courses consist of Premise Cabling, Structured Wiring, TIA/EIA Standards, as well as, Standard Electricity, Electronic Principles and Applications and CCTV Surveillance Systems and much more.

This program also includes 4800 hours of on-the-job training.
